sound Engineering
Though a specialist in live sound, I regularly record, mix and master sound for various productions in music, theatre and beyond. Notable companies include National Theatre, Wales Millennium Centre, BBC Cymru Wales, National Theatre Wales, National Dance COmpany Wales, Sherman Theatre + Leeway Productions. Below you will find a selection of projects that I have worked on, with my full cv available here .
Peter Pan
Sound Engineer
Sherman Theatre + Theatr Iolo
Peter Pan + Wendy, played By Rebecca Hayes + Emily Burnett.
When Wendy meets Peter Pan, she escapes to magical Neverland – a world of fairies, mermaids, and a pirate pursued by a crocodile.
It’s a land where you’re free to play, to have adventures, to fly and sing. But she also discovers a new group of children to look after – a tribe of Lost Boys who are looking for a mother.
Wendy must decide whether to stay in Neverland, or to return home to real life.
Based on J.M. Barrie’s timeless tale, this fresh new take on a much-loved classic sees the story through Wendy’s eyes and celebrates the power of the imagination to help us navigate life’s adventures. It thinks about what it means to grow up, and how we can all embrace living life in our own way.

Nigel Barrett as one of the press, interviewing some kids.
The entrance to Kidstown in Ebbw Vale.
Kidstown was a massive game that children made up themselves. After being handed a passport, kids entered the giant outdoor arena. Here, they found stuff to play with, build and wear. Assistants were on hand to help them realise their imaginings.
Grown-ups were invited to take a seat outside, relax and listen to the rolling news being broadcast of what happened inside. Over summer 2023, we collected interviews and stories from the young participants of Kidstown in order to create an epic show in 2024.

Working with Sound Designer dewi Jones, I installed and operated all sound elements for this touring outdoor installation. An in-the round, ‘immersive’ speaker setup was implemented inside the arena, whilst speakers were also placed outside for adults to listen in. All of the interviews were recorded via handheld radio mics or a parabolic mic.

Doreene Blackstock + Liz Crowther onstage in ‘Es and Flo’.
Hidden truths. Fading memories. Bomb-proof love.
Es and Flo fell fiercely in love in the 80s. They’ve been secretly living as lovers ever since. As Es becomes more forgetful around their home, an unexpected carer arrives. Who sent this woman? Why? Can they trust her?
As the outside world comes crashing in, Flo fights to protect the life they’ve built together over forty years behind closed doors. And faces the hardest battle of her life – to hold on to the woman she loves.

Dress rehearsal photo of The cast of 'The Cost Of Living' onstage.
Joseph K has a well-paid job in financial services. K barely notices the growing chaos all around on their walk to work each morning. Until one day, K is arrested. No one will tell K what the charges are, but still, they must be answered. Suddenly, K is on the outside looking in. And it’s cold and frightening out here.
Emily White’s stage adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Trial, weaves the nightmare of arrest and trial into a performance that highlights the never-ending price we pay at the mercy of arbitrary, unaccountable and insatiable power.

Horizons / Gorwelion
sound engineer
Horizons / Gorwelion is a scheme delivered by BBC Cymru Wales in partnership with Arts Council Wales to develop new, independent contemporary music in Wales.
After participating in the project as an artist in 2015 with band ‘Peasant’s King’, I became a regular with their festival crew as a sound engineer, recording and mixing multiple genres of upcoming, wales-based musicians at festivals all across the UK including Festival No. 6, Truck Festival, SWn Festival and more.
Here’s a small taste of some of the live performances I engineered and mixed for Horizons / Gorwelion, all directed and edited by Jamie Panton.
Rachel K Collier performs ‘Rust’ at Swansea Fringe.
Dan Bettridge performing ‘Heavenly Father’ at The Great Escape, Brighton.
Gallops performing ‘Pale Force’ at The Great Escape, Brighton.
Campfire Social performing an acoustic session at Festival No. 6, Portmeirion.
“Josh’s work is always broadcast quality and indeed consistently draws attention from radio producers for the sheer quality of the live recordings. He works with his own equipment and spends a number of hours multi-tracking the recordings after the events. He is an enthusiastic and flexible member of the team, always ready to support others in practical ways. Our live events are busy, long days, and he works hard in every situation. He’s reliable, engaging, and a fantastic addition to the team – a credit to the BBC Wales and Arts Council project.”
